"Get to the Point"
The Start of a New Journey
Its hard to believe that its almost been nine years since I retired from teaching and started my journey to becoming a serious writer. I've been substituting for several years now, so I still have some insight on what's happening in the school system. Not being a contracted teacher gives me a great advantage over the other teachers, no paperwork! I enjoy subbing in elementary classrooms, but my true niche is high school. It gives me the opportunity to really see what's happening through the eyes of our youth.
Spend some time in a high school cafeteria and you'll see exactly what I am talking about. I've always been a people watcher, the one thing I've noticed is that high school cliches still exist. There's still the popular jocks, the cheerleaders and the really smart kids who have those deep philosophical debates.
If you have watched the news you already know what's happening in the word and what it's like to be a young person facing all these social issues. OK, OK, so I know what you are thinking, so what's the point of this blog post ? That's just it, stories take time, history has to be made. You've got to know the back stories. I am an author and a playwright. In order to write a story or a play, you've got to go on a journey. You just can't focus on getting to the point. My meandering down the road about subbing and high school cafeterias lead me to write "Oh Snap, its for Real."
This stage production is about all those scary social topics happening in the world today, The Me Too Movement, Black Lives Matter, Teen Mental Health and the recent uprising of school shootings. While sitting in a high school cafeteria I realized that there was a journey that I needed to go on, there was a story that needed to be told and now was the time for its telling.
I hope that you become a regular follower of "Get to The Point," Over the next few months this blog will keep you informed about the journey that my cast and I will begin in February to get "Oh Snap, its for Real" to the stage. Stay tuned for updates, antidotes and highlights. Stay the course, and enjoy the journey.
Talk with you soon,
Roe
