"Busted in Brusly"
"Enough is Enough"
I've been watching the news again. I just really need to watch the weather and call it a day-- even that can be questionable. Several days ago I saw this report on a middle-school student in Brusly Louisiana and I was appalled at what I was witnessing, so hence I decided to write about it. Exercising the First Amendment through blogging has become quite liberating. Anyway, back to the young man in Brusly. Apparently he had used inappropriate language with the assistant principal earlier that day which resulted in the school official assigning the student a day of detention. A school video had been anonymously leaked to authorities showing what had occurred once the student tried to leave the school office.
Several online news reports regarding this incident indicated that the youth had prior verbal altercations with the assistant principal regarding his punishment. The day of the incident, the young man had come into the school office asking to make a phone call, because he wanted to go home. He attempted to leave the office, but was stopped by one of the building officers. The officer physically detained him from leaving the office by slamming him against the wall, then throwing him to the ground. The video also showed that the officer punched the student several times. Keep in mind that the officer out weighted the student by over one hundred pounds if not more.
Now here's the first problem that I see. Apparently this young man doesn't quite have a strong grasp of the English language that he could not respectfully voice his concerns to the school official without using profanity. In my day, the use of profanity in school, whether directed to another student or we dare, not even consider this with an adult was grounds for corporal punishment. As we all know, our day has long passed and we are dealing with a new generation of youth who who have their own set of ground rules when it comes to respecting authorities.
Could the problem possibly be that adults have let the ground rules change? Loose lips and loose morals can sink ships. Perhaps, tightening up expectations might be needed in this situation? Just a thought. Now lets examine the other situation, a scary situation that is happening, sadly to say, quite frequently. We have all seen the videos of the recent increase of minorities who have had encounters with law enforcement officials and how these encounters have taken a turn for the worst. I don't need to go through the list, they are numerous.
The significant increase in drug use, gun violence and mental health issues have left our society's moral codes tangling by a thin thread. The shifting of our social pendulum has created a void between our youth and law enforcement. Reaching back into my own past as a young high school student I remember an encounter that I had with a police officer. I was a senior working as a telemarketer selling magazine subscriptions, at least that's what I thought. This is quite a long story, so I am going to get to the point. It was a summer day in Pittsburgh, PA, I stood outside of my workplace waiting to catch the bus home. While standing at the bus stop I was approached by a police officer.
At first the officer told me that I needed to move along or he would need to take me downtown for prostitution. Little did I know that he had been staking out this telemarketing business for quite some time. When he realized that I was just an innocent kid waiting for the bus, he decided it was best to fill me in on what was actually occurring. I found out that I had been working for what appeared to be a small telemarketing company, but in reality was a cover for prostitution and the illegal selling of prescription drugs. The police officer had chosen to take the time to examine the situation and to realize that he was dealing with an innocent bystander who unknowingly was caught in the cross hairs of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
That encounter left an impression with me for years. I could have spent that summer day sitting in a police squad car on my way to the station, but instead I was permitted to catch the bus to go home and told never to return to that office again. Without question, I followed the officer's instructions. Now here's the point of why I am sharing this story with you. Because of this enlightening encounter with this police officer years ago I realized that his job was to protect me and keep me from physical harm, but it was his personal choice to inform me of a situation that could have reshaped my future forever.
I know what you are thinking, those times have changed, the world is a different place. Yes, this is true, however, there is one thing that has not changed. Personal choice. We as individuals living in a society where freedoms have been fought for have a voice. Some voices speak louder than others. There are times when we chose to use that voice to speak out against what we know is the right thing to do. The officer could have simply took me to the station and asked questions later, but he chose to weigh the circumstances and change the entire situation. I could have resisted his authority by displaying an unruly attitude toward authority figures, but instead I heeded his warning and I was permitted to go home without incidence.
Keep in mind that the police officer was white and I was a young black female leaving a office that was running a prostitution ring. Racial tension did exist, and there were blacks who were being wrongly accused of crimes they had not committed. There were also police officers who wanted nothing more than to uphold the law and protect citizens regardless of their racial orientation. This aspect has not changed, there are still police officers who go to work everyday with the goal of protecting citizens and fairly upholding the law.
How far must we go before we stop and think of the consequences and the lasting impact that we are making with our youth? Why could this situation not have had a different outcome? What went so horribly awry? No matter how you work the equation, two wrongs never make a right. If we probe a little deeper into this situation couldn't we ask ourselves why this young man struggled with accepting the consequences for his actions? Have we become a society where youth are not taught how to accept and understand that every action results in a reaction?
Why was an infraction that only resulted in a day of detention handled in this manner? Whatever happened to de-escalating situations to protect and guide children to making positive choices? Has any thought been given to the impression that this young man will now have of law enforcement because of this incident?
Now here's the even scarier reality. Why are we forced to see yet another atrocity involving a young African American male being put into a deadly situation? Why have we taken two steps forward, but three backwards in our attempt to stop racial discord and unnecessary violence? How did we get here? Did we ever really leave?
This incident has left a bad taste in the mouths of not only parents, but also leaves society with the impression that our children will forever struggle with finding positive role models to emulate. Let's not take our steps of progress and toss them aside giving rise to further marks of division and hatred especially when it comes to our youth.
